Playing with Rape

An action figure of "Rapist #1" from the movie Grindhouse...

Rape Crisis Scotland has launched a campaign to ban a t-shirt sold by ASDA which said "if at first you don't succeed, buy her another beer." Drug facilitated rape...funny.

I'm not surprised by the Quentin Tarantino "rapist #1" action figure because shit like that sells, and it does make me angry, but I must admit that I enjoyed the film "Grindhouse" for what I perceive as its feminist, albeit violent, undertones. I expected violence, it’s Tarantino. But what I found feminist and fantastic was the women totally kicking misogynistic male ass in both films. Particularly, when the heroines of each film stab out the eyes of the men who had, previously in the plots, objectified females by forcing and coercing women to dance for male sexual pleasure. It’s so symbolic! The females destroy the male gaze by stabbing the men directly in the eye, the lens, from which they’ve been objectifying the women. I realize, in the first film, Rose McGowan is scantily clad but you’ll also notice the film reels of the naked sex scenes are “missing” from both films - clever, hilarious, and feminist, if you ask me.
